Una teor\u00eda dice que fueron exportados desde China hacia Europa, por los portugueses. Entre las nuevas t\u00e9cnicas culinarias que trajeron, se incluy\u00f3 la modificaci\u00f3n de la masa de youtiao, tambi\u00e9n conocido como youzhagui en el sur de China. Otra teor\u00eda dice que los churros fueron inventados por pastores espa\u00f1oles para sustituir el pan fresco en los montes. Los churros empezaron a consumirse en Catalu\u00f1a a principios del siglo XIX, pero no se conoce\u00a0 al\u00a0 inventor. Seg\u00fan la Asociaci\u00f3n de Churreros catalana, su origen es posiblemente \u00e1rabe y se pierde en el tiempo. . \u00bfSignifica esto que nuestro maravilloso\u00a0 churro vino de China? \u00bfQuiz\u00e1 los portugueses lo distribuyeron en la Pen\u00ednsula Ib\u00e9rica? &#8230;&#8230; depender\u00e1 de a qui\u00e9n le preguntes. Como cuenta el historiador gastron\u00f3mico Michael Krondl: \u00bb A la gente le gusta mucho ser posesiva en todo lo relativo a la comida\u00bb. \u00abEs bastante dif\u00edcil que el churro venga de China\u00bb, apunta, \u00absin embargo, la idea del bu\u00f1uelo ya data de los \u00e1rabes. Y, en cierta manera, el churro tal y como lo conocemos hoy no es tan diferente de una receta de bu\u00f1uelos hechos de harina y agua que ya se encuentra en un libro de cocina romano del siglo I a.C.
